Sudanese youth cause mayhem

By Florence Ombima

MARAUDING Sudanese refugees recently held a local estate to a hostage when they attacked each other before ruthlessly turning to their Kenyan counterparts.
Our sources indicated that the refugees were under the influence of drugs when the incident occurred. The source informed the Star of Nakuru, ten young men of the Sudanese refugees in Kenya origin who had been on drinking spree caused mayhem in a section of Mawanga estate to the chagrin of the locals.
An eye witness Antony Wachira said that trouble started when two rival groups of the refugees attacked each other during a drinking spree at a local entertainment spot. According to the eye witness, the rowdy Sudanese nationals later turned their tempers to Kenyans at the spot, on suspicion that the Kenyans had stolen their money and mobile phones.
Our sources further divulged that several people were injured during the fracas that lasted for over a half an hour. “Tension reigned as several local youth tried to regroup in readiness to counter attack the foreigners” said a source. The incident was later reported to the local teachers’ police station for investigations.
According to our investigations, idle Sudanese refugees youth who spend most of their time consuming drugs and spending money lavishly often assault locals upon little provocation or otherwise.
Mawanga estate residents now want the local police to investigate the matter and take necessary action. A resident Benard Mayaka said that locals who uphold law and order seldom, take the law in their own hands. “The foreigners are ignorant of our laws and that is why they behave irresponsibly” he told this writer.
In the early 1990’s the government of Kenya allowed Sudanese nationals fleeing their war ravaged country to live in Kenya as refugees. To date most still live in Kenya even after the United Nations Refugees Programme introduced a repatriation plan some time back.
