Naivasha Dog Meat Seller Nabbed

POLICE in Naivasha arrested a man who had been selling dog meat to unsuspecting residents. Recently residents of Karagita estate on the outskirts of Naivasha town got a rude shock when they discovered that a local cheap meat hawker had been selling to then dog meat. The Ugandan national namely Amanse Aroni Agastin will however only be charged with being in Kenya illegally. According to the Kenyan laws only bush meat from illegal hunting is punishable by law. In the case here dogs are domesticated animals but not classified as wildlife.

The middle aged man before being under arrest admitted that he had been pushed by poverty to sale dog meat to his neighbors. The residents who had found him skinning a dog he had earlier slaughtered handed him to police.
This comes as many Kenyans continue to experience food scarcity due to rising food prices and scarcity. Naivasha is one of the areas in the country hit with hunger.

Never the less, in many societies of the world, dog meat is a taboo. Where many people keep dogs as pets, it is generally forbidden to slaughter and consume a dog’s meat.

Medicinal
In some parts of the world like Asia, dog meat is eaten as an alternative source of meat or for specific medicinal benefits.
A source on the internet says dogs have historically been emergency sources of food for various people in the world like; Siberia, Alaska, Northern Canada and Green land. “Dogs are usually beasts of burden but occasionally are eaten when no food is available” Says the source.

In China, dog meat has been a source of food since 500 BC. According to historians Chinese people value dog meat for its medicinal values. “The three beasts” writings of ancient philosophies referred to: Dog, Goat and Pig that ancient Chinese people kept as a source of food. Dog meat is consumed in other parts of the world like India, Indonesia, Germany, Malaysia, Japan, Korea, among others.

Kisumu
Meanwhile in Nyanza province a man killed his brother over a wife inheritance dispute. Odero Oruoch reports a young man in Nyanza prepares to face murder charges after he reportedly killed his elder brother following a wife inheritance quarrel.

A source informed the Star of Nakuru that a wife inheritance saga boiled over when two brothers differed over who between them was justified to inherit their step mother, after their father died.

The source held that Charles Owour 20, died after his young brother Victor Onyango 19, attacked him with a crude weapon. Police later arrested the suspect as angry neighbors threatened to take the law into their own hands.

Wife inheritance custom among close family members is a common practice among members of the Lou communities of Kenya. Medical pundits and women organizations have however in the recent past castigated the practice terming it as source of the spread of the dreaded HIV and AIDS disease, apart from infringing on the rights of widows.
